Each piece from this body of work is an exploration. I work through it intuitively, without a plan, building up layers of texture and colour.

It is a meditative process, and with the use of colour, a cathartic one. These pieces are created with a combination of a hand-made paper base, layers of paint, and untraditional machine stitching—distressing the stitches and snipping them. Previously I produced only two-dimensional pieces, but in this body of work, I am interested in the materials coming away from the surface, drawing the viewer into the work!

The little kingdoms of moss, the movement of sea anemones, the bright colours of coral—we find comfort and freedom in these wild, living things. The explorative stitch techniques are used to portray the character, structural compositions, and vivid colours found in nature’s work. Each piece encapsulates my response to how I experience nature: its beauty, its wonder, and its spirituality. Nature to me is perfect, nurturing, forgiving!
